EMOTIONAL BALANCE ZONE: the connection between mental well-being and food choices

The window of tolerance, a concept developed by Daniel Siegel, is a range within which we can manage emotions and stress in a healthy way. When we are within this window, we feel calm and able to cope with what is happening. Outside the window, two main reactions can occur:

  1. Above the window: We are in a state of agitation, anxiety, or stress.
  2. Below the window: we are in a state of apathy, fatigue, or “disconnection”.

Application to weight loss and excess weight

In the context of body weight and eating habits, the tolerance window is useful to understand how we react emotionally to food and the challenges of losing weight.

Inside the window:

When we are in balance:

  • We make more mindful food choices.
  • We can follow a meal plan.
  • We face difficulties (such as cravings for sweets or a stressful day) without overreacting.

Above the window:

When we are above the window:

  • Stress or anxiety lead us to seek comfort in food (emotional eating).
  • We may overindulge in foods high in sugar or fat to ease agitation.

Below the window:

When we are below the window:

  • We feel drained of energy and motivation, which may lead us to skip meals or choose very high-calorie foods to compensate for low energy.
  • At times, this can lead to resignation (“I’ll never manage it”) and abandoning the process.

How can the window of tolerance support weight loss?

  1. Recognize where you are:
    • Ask yourself: “Am I eating because I am physically hungry, or because I am stressed or tired?”
  2. Stay in the window:
    • Use techniques to stay balanced, such as taking a walk, deep breathing or meditation.
  3. Avoid automatic reactions:
    • When you are outside the window, find another way to calm down or recharge without relying on food as the only solution.
  4. Learn to tolerate discomfort:
    • Accept that stress or fatigue should not automatically lead you to eat; you can handle them in other ways.

Working with the window of tolerance can help you maintain a healthy relationship with food and with your weight-loss journey.
