Format: e-book

In Slowly, but for Good, the author proposes a new approach to weight loss and well-being, challenging quick fixes and extreme diets that often lead to yo-yo dieting and long-term failure. The book examines why many people struggle to maintain a healthy weight, moving beyond simple nutritional solutions to explore the psychological, emotional and social dimensions that shape eating behaviour.

By integrating nutrition science, psychology, physiology and behavioural change, the book presents a method for reaching and maintaining an ideal weight sustainably and naturally. It offers practical strategies for managing stress, improving body awareness and developing flexible eating habits that can be adapted to individual needs.

I do not enjoy writing forewords, but I cannot refuse Claudio Lombardo, such is his passion for what he has written. Nor can I abandon the provocative spirit that has always accompanied me: why, then, should I not be an algorithm? From one psychological perspective, I too could be an algorithm—embodied as much as one likes, but still an algorithm: a set of structured procedures learned through programmes that include the potential for autonomous development. I think of Spike Jonze’s 2013 film Her, with its plausible interactions between person and person, person and machine, and machine and machine. “Someone” or “something”, regardless of who or what, interacts with the other and comes to know both self and other more deeply. Science, after all, interprets and narrates events and causes; it differs from other narratives because it must follow epistemological principles, which themselves change across time and place. Everything flows.

The right amount of food chosen for your body supports healthy thinking, and healthy thinking helps you choose the right amount of food for your body. The World Health Organization defines obesity as a multifactorial disease and recognises it as a global epidemic. Environmental pressures and personal, social, family, relational, behavioural, genetic and biological factors can all contribute to overweight and obesity. This book examines them within a broader psycho-social-biological perspective that considers psychological and relational dimensions alongside organic and socio-environmental ones.

Writing a book tests one’s ability to navigate the world’s maze of judgements and assumptions, especially when a subject requires a careful differential definition. This publication, to which my contribution is grounded primarily in emotional and experiential resonance, does not claim to offer a complete or single perspective, catalogue every disappointment, or justify any form of abuse.

Obesity and overweight have become major issues in Western and westernised societies, comparable in reach to traditional philosophical questions about the world, humanity and truth. What are overweight and obesity, and how can they be addressed? Understanding these issues requires examining the many factors involved: cognitive, emotional, experiential, behavioural, social, economic, environmental, relational and family influences, as well as biological and genetic ones. This handbook is intended primarily for weight-management professionals—physicians, nutritionists, dietitians, psychologists, psychotherapists, nutrition educators and personal trainers—and for readers who want to understand the origins and nature of overweight and obesity.

Human bones support the flesh as rocks support the earth. Within the human body lies a lake of blood, and within it the lungs expand and contract with the breath, just as the oceans rise and fall with the breathing of the world. Every vein begins at that lake of blood and runs through the body, as the ocean fills the earth with countless channels of water. The human body is an analogy for the whole world…
