In its 2 October 2026 edition, the newspaper Alto Adige interviews Claudio Lombardo about his experiences of Barefoot Alpine Running. Matteo Igini looks back at two barefoot undertakings: the ascent of Cima Grande di Lavaredo and the complete crossing of Mount Etna, from its northern side to its southern side.

From Dolomite rock to volcanic terrain

Lombardo describes the vertical climbing involved in the Lavaredo ascent, completed in mid-September with Giovanni Anzelmo. His account of Mount Etna, undertaken alongside mountaineer Filip Babicz, highlights the difficulties of volcanic terrain, wind and cold. These are different experiences, both supported by daily preparation.

Preparation, skills and gradual progression

The interview emphasises progressive adaptation, an understanding of one’s body and the presence of a partner during demanding undertakings. It also distinguishes Barefoot Alpine Running from the more gradual experiences of the Barefoot Alpine Method, without presenting either as an invitation to imitate extreme activities.

Mountain activities, barefoot movement and exposure to cold carry risks. This account does not replace preparation, an assessment of conditions or qualified guidance.
