What can EEG detect?

  • Through EEG and its mathematical analysis, it is possible to detect:
    1. Cognitive style of the subject (hemispheric dominance).
    2. Integration between the two hemispheres.
    3. Levels and symmetry of brain waves (delta, theta, alpha, beta).
    4. Symmetry between different points of the same hemisphere.
    5. General activation level.
  • This information, integrated with peripheral measurements (heart rate, muscle tone, breathing), provides an overall picture of the person’s psychosomatic state.

EEG frequency spectrum:

  • EEG frequencies are divided into:
    • Low frequencies (alpha, theta): associated with relaxation and altered states of consciousness.
    • High frequencies (beta 1 and beta 2): associated with alertness, organisation and attention.
  • EEG training can induce different states:
    • Low frequencies: relaxation, introspection, sometimes trance.
    • High frequencies: vigilance and mental focus.

Neurofeedback Training Structure:

  • Sessions include short relaxation intervals (microbreaks) to avoid side effects such as irritability or distraction.
  • Training may include personalised approaches:
    1. Standard sessions: thresholds established according to the initial results and maintained throughout the programme.
    2. Dynamic sessions: modified thresholds depending on the patient’s response.
  • Constant audio-visual feedback is important to guide the patient.

Filters and speed:

  • Using fast digital filters improves the effectiveness of EEG feedback, reducing artifacts and improving accuracy.
  • Filters with bandwidths of 2–5 Hz provide rapid response times, which is useful for personalised training.

EEG data display:

  • Main approaches:
    1. Traditional formats: raw signals or graphs (bars, lines).
    2. Interactive video games: controlled by EEG signals, they make feedback engaging and suitable for people of all ages, including children.
